OUR HISTORY
Founded in 2007, “That’s ‘SEW’ Gee’s Bend, Inc. our privately owned, grassroots company formed as a labor of love for ‘Benders’ Tinnie and Minnie Pettway by their daughter/niece and son-in-law, DeLon and Claudia Charley. Though headquartered in Cropwell, Alabama, TSGB is 100% born and bred in Gee’s Bend.
Created out of the turmoil of the misrepresentation of the quilters over the years, we decided to take back the heritage and hard work of our mother (former Gee’s Bend quilt collective member) and aunt quilts and represent them personally and proudly. Within a year of formation, their collection line “Tinnie Pieces with Minnie Designs” was on display in museums, galleries and libraries throughout the southeast and Midwest and stayed “grassroots” in smaller towns in Alabama.
“That’s ‘SEW’ Gee’s Bend is also proud to introduce Tinnie’s First published book of poems, “The Gee’s Bend Experience – Vol. 1” from our self-publishing division of our company, “Tinnie Thoughts, Minnie Books”. She is also the first published author from Gee’s Bend! Released in November 2008, we are presently on a bookstore/library tour throughout the state of Alabama. Tinnie, along with Minnie has been received with great excitement and interest in their stops, sharing their life experiences growing up in Gee’s Bend, and the book has been doing exceptionally well. She is presently preparing for the Volume 2 follow-up to be released this spring/summer with a possible tour called “The Gee’s Bend Experience Quilt Exhibit/Book Tour”
We are preparation stages of giving our “taste” of Gee’s Bend through our cake line called Gee’s Bend Flav’r Cakes and also to venture into the clothing couture and designs with our forthcoming clothing line, aptly named, “Off The Clothesline”.
We are a company that is surprised and proud of what has been accomplished (see ‘Quilt’ography) through a faith in a vision that was given to us that is now a reality. And we are excited about what’s to come. We are presently refurbishing our 5-generation owned mercantile store in Gee’s Bend that will house everything above and more. Our near future goals include a gift shop, restaurant and lodging and in the process, establishing our non-profit division of our company, “Taking Back Gee’s Bend, Inc” which will provide jobs, training and opportunities to be given to our community.
